Can AI keep horses safe on the road?
Is AI also improving safety for horses and other animals on the road? Yes, it is. At a rural crossroads near Darlington in northern England, AI detection and a SWARCO ITS Vehicle Activated Sign now warn drivers when a rider on horseback is waiting at the junction.
Darlington Borough Council came to us after a serious crash at the crossroads in January 2023. The AI detection comes from our partner Teledyne FLIR and uses thermal imaging. The Vehicle Activated Sign lights up when a vehicle approaches. In this video, Paul Wright, Senior Technical Estimator at SWARCO ITS, explains how the horse detection works and what drivers approaching on the A167 see.
