SE Major Bridges Manager (Queensferry Crossing & Kincardine Bridge), BEAR Scotland

Chartered Civil Engineer with 17 years industry experience in structural design and construction management, specialising in bridges. Graduated from Dundee University in 2006 with an MEng Degree in Civil Engineering Design and Management. Gained chartership with ICE during a six-year spell as a design consultant with Atkins working on various major UK rail infrastructure projects. Three years spent working in the UK northeast Oil & Gas sector as an onshore engineering contractor specialising in structural modification to existing offshore assets. Joined BEAR Scotland northeast trunk road maintenance contract in 2015 working in various bridge engineering roles including NE Unit Bridges Manager from 2020 to 2022.  In December 2022, transferred to the role of Southeast Major Bridges Manager for Queensferry Crossing and Kincardine Bridge.

Queensferry Crossing Cable Cleaning

  • A look at the problem of ice accretion on cable-stayed structures and the mitigation measures being adopted, with specific reference to the work completed to date for Queensferry Crossing.
  • A focus on the scheme that was created to implement targeted cleaning of the stay cables to reduce the build-up of dirt and debris as one measure to deter ice accumulating on the stay cables.
  • Present detail the specialist equipment used to clean the cables (supplied and operated by VSL).
  • Discuss access strategy, risk, safety, and challenges during the cleaning process.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the cleaning regime and look ahead at future strategy.
