Jimmy Barratt-Thorne

Associate Director, WSP

Jimmy is an Associate Director with 15 year's of experience in the bridge engineering industry with experience leading projects across the project lifecycle, including; feasibility & options studies, assessments, inspections, rehabilitation schemes, and detailed design.

The bulk of his experience is in the detailed design and delivery of highway bridge structures in various structural materials with a particular speciality in reinforced and prestressed concrete design as well as integral bridges.

Jimmy is the concrete materials lead within the Net Zero Strategy Group for Civil and Bridge Engineering, working with cross industry groups to lower the embodied carbon of concrete.

Jimmy is also currently studying at Cambridge University completing an MSt researching the embodied carbon of bridge substructures.

Designing with Carbon Consciousness Bridge Substructure and Wingwalls

14:50 - 15:15 Carbon Management
  • This presentation is about how preliminary design choices influence the embodied carbon of bridges.
  • Jimmy Barratt-Thorne will present his work as part of his dissertation from the University of Cambridge.
  • Using a case study of a single-span integral bridge he compares how differing substructure choices from PD 6694 influence embodied carbon, and what conditions provide an optimal solution.
  • Nick Fenwick will present a study that looks into wingwall efficiency, looking at how the embodied carbon differs depending on the orientation of the wingwall with respect to the bridge, as well as how different materials such as reinforced soils can contribute to carbon efficiency.
