Henry Williams and Son (Roads) Ltd has been a family-owned business for five generations, with a history in road construction and highways maintenance stretching back to the 1860's. Our pride in the company's history along with our widespread experience, innovative approach, and personal commitment ensures we provide our clients with the highest standards of service.
We have bespoke, sustainable solutions to solve new build and maintenance challenges for all types of infrastructure and the road network. We work for a variety of private and public sector clients, taking on the role of Principal Contractor, and we also work for Tier 1 and Tier 2 contractors, in a subcontractor role.

Our accreditations include: ISO 45001, ISO 9001, NHSS13, Constructionline Gold, SSIP, Acclaim, Avetta and Builder's Profile.
We are certified with Planet Mark, and we already self-generate 50% of our electricity, with a plan to be 100% self-sufficient soon. We also plan to switch our entire fleet, including HGV's, to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) this year, plus all of our company cars will be Electric or Hybrid Electric as soon as these are available.
Products
Civil Engineering
We carry out new-build construction, as well as the maintenance and upgrading of existing infrastructure.
Our experienced, in-house teams are fully compliant for NRSWA plus Section 278 and Section 38 works.
Asphalt Surfacing
We are able to draw upon a wide range of pavers to suit the size and nature of the contract and we benefit from competitive material prices from our key asphalt suppliers.
We offer traditional machine-lay and hand-lay asphalt surfacing, as well as more specialist resin surfacing.
With the ability to offer such a wide range of surfacing options, we are best-placed to provide expert advice on the best performing and most cost-effective surfacing solution for our clients’ requirements.
We combine the asphalt macadam surfacing works with the civil engineering and/or surface dressing operations to provide our customers with a unique ‘one-stop-shop’ service.
Surface Dressing
We offer all types of specialist surface dressing to provide carriageway, footway, driveway, canal towpath or car park operators with a cost-effective solution to seal and protect the highway surface, increase skid resistance and/or provide enhanced aesthetic value through the use of decorative aggregates.
We use polymer modified binders (PMBs) on all our surface dressing operations to ensure maximum shear strength, maximum chipping bond, and to reduce sensitivity to higher road temperatures.
We offer aggregate sizes ranging from 6mm and 10mm, to 14mm available in a variety of colours and can be combined through double dressings, racked in dressings and alternative scheme layouts.
Our specialist, bespoke plant for footway surface dressing is designed and constructed at our in-house, specialist workshop, using our expert knowledge and experience in this area.
All plant is fully calibrated to ensure an accurate rate of spread (ROS) of the bitumen emulsion binder and chippings and an onboard heating system ensures that the polymer modified bitumen is applied at an optimum temperature.
Asphalt Preservation
Growing in demand, asphalt preservation is a very sustainable and cost-effective process, where the service life of a road or footway surface course can be significantly extended.
Working with ASI Solutions’ RHiNOPHALT asphalt preservation treatment is extremely effective for increasing the service life of all types of road and footway surfaces, where our specialist, bespoke plant is used to apply RHiNOPHALT.
Bond Coating & Vertical Joint Sealing
Over the past 10 years, improvements in health, safety and quality standards across the industry have increased demand for machine-applied combination bond coating and vertical jointing operations.
In particular, the requirements of ISO BS 594987:2015 + A1:2017 has placed an increased responsibility on the surfacing contractor to machine-apply polymer modified bond coats to the specified rates of spread.
We operate a range of emulsion tankers, from 12,000-litre carriageway sprayers to 200-litre footway sprayers, capable of spraying widths ranging from 0.20m to 4.50m wide, and at the specified rates of spread.
As well as applying bond coats, our combination sprayers apply a hot 50-pen polymer modified bitumen directly against the vertical face of surface courses and/or binder courses.
This approach provides a safer alternative to the more traditional hand application of hot bitumen as well as ensuring an even and thorough distribution of binder along the joint.
It is also possible to over-band and spray the free-edge of verge-side carriageways to seal and protect.
Retread
Retread (Carriageway/Footway Shallow Depth Insitu Recycling)
This is a recycling process where the existing aggregate in the carriageway, footway or other infrastructure is planed, regraded, and reprofiled, before hot-applied bitumen emulsion is added, and recompacted to the required line and level.
Retread has been successfully carried out for many years in urban and rural locations; for carriageways, footways, car parks and low-speed HGV parking plus storage/yard areas.
This innovative and environmentally-friendly process provides significant reductions in resource, carbon, cost, time and inconvenience to stakeholders, compared to traditional resurfacing solutions.
Fencing
Specialist Fencing
Our fencing division has been providing specialist fencing to the construction industry for over 11 years, and our fencing contracts manager has over 30 years technical knowledge of the trade.
Our extensive supply and installation service covers public and private sectors including; industrial, commercial, health, education, sports and leisure, civil engineering and highways plus residential sectors.
We carry out all types of steel and timber fencing plus gates. This includes specialist services, like security fencing, automated gates and architectural screening options, such as Living Walls and Rock Cages.
These provide an alternative to traditional fencing and give our clients aesthetically pleasing options. We also offer design support and welcome the opportunity to be involved at the earliest stages of any project, so the optimum fencing solutions can be explored with the project team.
