IKM Consulting to launch mobile mapping technology at Traffex Road Expo

Specialist data Capture Company, IKM Surveying, part of the IKM Consulting Group, is to launch a new mobile mapping service at Traffex Road Expo on the back of a successful pilot with Bear Scotland.

Designed to improve efficiency and safety of road survey procedures, the technology allows engineering and planning professionals to efficiently map and easily prioritise transportation and infrastructure projects.

Using the latest in digital data capture technologies, Falkirk-based IKM Surveying uses a vehicle mounted mobile lidar system, multi-camera imaging and field software for precision high volume data capture of roads, rail, land, waterways as well as GIS data collection and asset management.

Operated by just one surveyor, the system significantly cuts down on time and cost as the high-density point cloud data is collected from a moving vehicle.  Furthermore, it improves safety conditions as the surveyor remains in the vehicle, therefore there is no requirement for traffic management measures to be put in place.

David Taylor, IKM Consulting’s managing director explained: “Having access to a data set that provides such a complete picture of the route for maintenance and integrity purposes can only improve the way roadway projects are undertaken in the future.

The time saved from traditional survey methods and potential for project collaboration will drive long term roadway maintenance programmes in the future.

The pilot with BEAR Scotland involved mobile mapping across ten sites across Scotland, including the M90/A9 Broxden Interchange and the A835 Garve.

The laser scanning based technology provided a 360-degree immersive and georeferenced point cloud data set that allowed BEAR Scotland to interrogate the condition of road markings, signs and surface conditions.

In addition to providing highly accurate carriageway data, the survey simultaneously captured details of the verge areas such as safety barriers, drainage gullies, tree lines and boundary fences.

Speaking about the pilot project, Eddie Ross, BEAR Scotland’s North West Operating Company Representative, said: Unlike a traditional topographical survey, mobile mapping with IKM Surveying is much more efficient and safer.

Using the mobile mapping system also eliminates the need for traffic management, helping to reduce potential delays and disruption to road users, while also reducing the need for special access or time on the road. It’s a much safer data-gathering method compared to traditional techniques and was a huge asset to this stage of the various schemes.

Following the pilot, mobile mapping with IKM Surveying is now a fully-fledged service offered by IKM Consulting.

Eddie added: “We’re currently looking at ways to work with IKM Surveying again in future projects.

IKM Consulting will be on stand E35 at Traffex Road Expo between 31st October – 1st Nov 2018.  For more information, please contact Graham Litts on 01324 878822 or send an email to info@ikmsurveying.co.uk
