In 1978 Wayne graduated from Portsmouth University. He is a Chartered Engineer with 40 years' experience in bridge management, maintenance, strengthening, design and construction. Wayne worked for consultants for over 20 years. In 1998 he joined the Scottish Office, National Roads Directorate, to work on Trunk Road structures. In 2012 he was appointed Chief Bridge Engineer with a team of 11 Engineers and now manages and maintains 5000 structures with an annual budget of £63m. Wayne sits on a number of UK bridges forums. In June 2015 the Forth Road Bridge became Transport Scotland's responsibility, and later in 2017 the new Queensferry Crossing will pass to Wayne's team.
